Global Read Aloud 2023

 

“While school is the place where literacy develops, it is nurtured and shared throughout the community.”

‘Global Read Aloud’ is about celebrating the power of reading aloud. It encourages children to grab a book, find an audience and read aloud!

MRIS 46 Grade 6 students participated in Global Read Aloud 2023 with the objective to read one book to connect the world, to stimulate interest,  imagination, and  to promote the joy of reading. Global collaboration is necessary for students to understand that they are part of something bigger than them.

Jasmine Warga's A Rover's Story , a science fiction was read by students. The story is utterly captivating tale of an endearing robot named Resilience (Res), who's being sent on a mission to Mars. Camden-Rockport Middle School, USA and Cadarackque Public School in Ajax , Ontario, Canada were the partner schools. The GRA 2023 was integrated with English, ICT and Arts.

BOOK SWAP 2023

 

The Manav Rachna International School Sec 46 Library has organize BOOK SWAP from 4^th to 15^th July 2023. This was a chance for young readers to indulge in a grand act of recycling by leaving their already read books in library and taking new titles given by students. More than 500 titles were exchanged and many more are looking forward for the next book exchange. Book Swap empowers, motives and help students to make positive choices for their education and the environment. Through Book Swap MRIS 46 library promotes Recycling of Reading and encourage the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Brightening the day of modern parents and teachers, author talk session was organized by Manav Rachna International School, sec 46 Library. Author Dr. Manuja Pooja Shroff  had introduced her book “Baby Steps to Big Dreams”. The session started with the sharing of book blurb followed by book reading session. The author had shared her journey of book writing and revealed the secret of Modren Parenting. It was an interactive session which was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.

World Book & Copyright Day Celebration 2023

 

In order to provide a propitious environment where the young talents would think out of the box and have a great learning experience World Book and copyright Day 2023 was celebrated on 24^th and 25^th April  by library for the pupils of Manav Rachna International School, sector 46 Gurugram. It was a chance to read for pleasure and students participated in numerous engrossing activities. Book Launch of “Heechki” by ms. Geetika Goyal and author talk by young author Sia Gupta were the most interesting events of the celebration. Poetry session was a great hit where students of grades 9 to 11 , presented their self composed poems. The guest poets Mr. Raj Nigam and Ms. Indu Nigam were the guest judges. Art integration was the main element of the celebration where art was integrated with literature and the participants expressed their ideas through illustrations.

Library Week 2022

 

Annual event “Library Week 2022” was observed at Manav Rachna International School from 11th July 2022 to 15th July 2022. The event was started with the Author’s Talk by Dr. Harshali Singh followed by an author talk by Ms. Anupama Jain. They had introduced their latest publication and encouraged the students to develop regular reading habits highlighting the advantages of reading. They directed the school authorities to include one reading lesson in the school time schedule. A skit on 'Merchant of Venice' was enacted by students, that was appreciated a lot by everyone. Alluring work of art was exhibited in school premises.

Ms. Simi Srivastava, Ms. Trina Roy & Ms. Renu Jain conducted a story- telling session for preprimary & primary grades students. The students listened with rapt attention as they read aloud stories from Indian Folk Tales. All the stories they told had interesting aspects about human nature which aroused excitement and curiosity among the students. Later in the week, there was a cartoon workshop for class VII by the renowned cartoonist Mr. Ajit Narayan, professional freelance cartoonist who has been drawing for reputed publishing houses and other print media for over 20 years. The workshop proved to be a perfect amalgamation of learning and fun and our young learners were delighted to draw their own comic strips using stick-figures with guidance from the acclaimed cartoonist. The renowned poets Mr. Anil Srivastava & Mr. Narender Sharma “Khamosh” were invited as guest poets for Hasya Kavi Sammelan. Students of grade 10 had enjoyed the spell bound poetry session where poems were recited by poets, students & teachers. Young Authors Ms. Kashish Jena from  Ryan International School, Vasant Kunj and Mr.  Dhruv Kabir alumni of Manav Rachna International school, sec 46 were invited to share their experience as published authors. The School library was the venue of various events for classes Nur to XII. Week long book fair was organized by school library to add excitement about books and reading among students. 

 

 

World Book & Copyright Day 2022

   

   

  

 

World Book Day, also known as World Book and Copyright Day, is celebrated across the globe on every year April 23 . Manav Rachna International School, sec 46 Gurugram had organised a week-long celebration from 18^th to 22^nd April with numerous engrossing activities for students of toddlers to grade 12. The entire celebration was centred around William Shakespeare to pay tribute to the legend. An exhibition on the work & life of William Shakespeare was the centre of attraction. It was a great experience for all. In order to provide a propitious environment for the young talents to think out of the box and have a great learning experience, author talks, workshops, storytelling sessions, puppet shows and many other activities were organised. Added to the excitement and learning experience of the students, a book fair was organised by the school. Apart from activities various educational power point presentations and videos were presented. Book donation drive was also organised by the school library in collaboration with Karyashala Foundation to spread the joy of reading among underprivileged children. World Book Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm to recognise and promote the benefits of reading, publishing and copyright.

The author had shared his journey of book writing and revealed the secret of Indian Forests. It was an interactive session which was thoroughly enjoyed by the students.

ManavRachna International School- 46 Library had organized an online author talk session on December 3, 2021, for young readers of grades 6 to 8.  Ms PurnimaRamakrishnan ,UN award-winning journalist, an author joined the session on MS Teams from Chennai and ms.GayatriPachpande    .They had shared stories from their new release “Tales from Vedas and Upnishads”  . They had shared some pictures of journey of making of the book followed by a question answer session. Through engaging discussion sessions,

 

participants enhanced their critical thinking skills, and ability to express themselves.

Inter Clan Poetry Competition

 

 “Poetry is simply the most beautiful, impressive, and widely effective mode of saying things.”

An Inter-Clan Poetry Competition was organized by MRIS 46 Library on 29^th and 30^th October, 2021.

Beauty is the realm of poetry; the students of primary and middle school enthusiastically participated in the competition as they got an opportunity to exhibit their talent and confidence. The competition inspired the young poets to come forward and recite their self composed poem. The students came up with different poems on the given themes and recited them with great fondness and zeal. Audience enjoyed the perfection of expression, thoughts, emotions, rhythm and music of words. The young poets enthralled the spectators with their articulation and writing skills while reciting poems. It was a splendid opportunity for them to gain confidence through this exposure. Everyone was delighted after seeing their pleasing performances.

The judges appreciated and applauded the performances of the participants and admired their capacity and confidence of writing and reciting poem.

Virtual Student’s Meet:  “ Where We Are”

 

“Where we are?” was organized by Manav Rachna International School Sec 46 Library on 28th August 2021 with Don Bosco High School 2, Indonesia. This was a 45-60 minute critical thinking challenge that our class took part in while virtual meeting on MS Teams with another class somewhere else in the world.  Students' goal wass to guess the other school's location (country, state, city, school name).  We had done this by showing clue pictures and questions. 

 

 

 

 

   

 

 

 

 

LIBRARY WEEK 2021

 

 

 

Manav Rachna International School, sec 46 library had organized Library Week 2021 from 5^th to 9^th July with the theme "Adventure in Space and Time." The motive of the week-long celebration was to inspire students with the latest happening in science and technology and introduce science fiction to them. The whole week was full of sci-fi author talks, storytelling sessions, hands-on experiment sessions, career counseling sessions, and the Science talks. To inspire the students with science fiction, Mr. Jeffery Kipple, a sci-fi author from Toronto, Canada was invited as a guest speaker. He had delivered his thoughts about imagination, science fiction, the power of mindset, and his book "The Ridiculous Adventure of Serbinand." The session was successfully organized to inspire students to read science fiction. Ms. Aneeta Sundraraj, from Malaysia was connected and delivered her thoughts on the joy of reading and writing science fiction. Dr. B. Shaylja, Director, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, Bangalore, had shared some secrets of the Universe and inspired students to think about Astronomy as a career choice. The week ended with science talk by Mr. Tushir and career counseling session by Ms. Seem Nagar. Week-long activities were highly appreciated by children and parents.

11^th and 14^th September 2020

 

 

Manav Rachna International School 46 Library in association with Westland Publications had organized virtual Author Talk with a  well known children author Khyrunnisa A on MS Teams. Khyrunnisa A. was currently engages in two virtual visits for students of Grade 5 and 6 on 11^th and 14^th September, 2020 respectively. She had shared her experience of writing well famous “Butterfinger series”. She read the blurb of her latest release “ Crocodile Who Ate Butter Chicken for Breakfast and Other Stories”. Various questions were asked by young readers and writers during Question Hour to understand her journey as an award-winning writer of children’s fiction and the author of the hilarious Butterfingers series. It was an interactive session which was thoroughly enjoyed by the students.

Library Week 2020

 

Manav Rachna International School Sec 46 Library had celebrated its ‘Library Week’ from 13. 07.20 to 17.07.20. All students and their parents were invited virtually  on MS TEAMS to join the celebrations. The aim of celebration was to support United Nation’s SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL 3- Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Which leads to the topic of Sports and Reading Together.  Many workshops were organised to educate the students on how best they can make use of their time and can create balance between Sports and Reading together  . They were also told how to write poems and what type of books they should read. People had enjoyed story telling sessions, Talk with various Arjuna Award winners, session on Mental Health by doctors, healers and trainers . A Poetry session with Delhiwallah Poetry Club was appreciated by everyone. Open mic session was also a major event where students recited their self composed poems. The whole week was full of fun.

Live Author Reading Session

As a part of weeklong Mother’s Day celebration, MRIS 46 Library in association with Westland publications had organized an online author talk session on May 5, 2020 for young readers of grade 7.  Ms Anita Roy, a mother, an author, an editor joined the session on MS Teams from Southwest England. She had introduced her book Gravepyres School for Recently Deceased. 

To encourage the skills of listening and reading, she read some chapters of her novel and had shared some pictures of journey of making of the story followed by question answer session.Ms Anita continues to talk to the students about what she was like as a teenager, her career path and life as an author, she exudes enthusiasm, passion and sincerity. 

Although this is undoubtedly a special opportunity for students, it seems at the same time this is just as special session for Ms. Anita Roy too.Gravepyres School for the Recently Deceased is a gorgeous debut Young Adult fantasy novel by Anita Roy. 

Through engaging discussion sessions, participants enhanced their critical thinking skills, self-esteem and ability to express themselves.

ABOUT MS. JYOTI :

Jyoti is a trained counsellor and practicing psychologist with an experience of over 15 years in the field of teaching and counseling.She is a passionate learner and a great believer in the unlimited potential of human beings.

She has been trained in Solution Focused Brief therapy, CognitiveBehaviorTherapy, Hypnotherapy(California Hypnotherap Institute) , NLP(School Of Excellence) and Happiness (ICEP Europe).

Jyoti is also a Mindfulness Practitioner. She has conducted workshops for teachers and students all over India. In the recent past, she has conducted workshops as a resource person for NCERT at RIE Bhopal and Ajmer and was amongst one of the invitees to deliver a lecture on Happiness at Amity University Noida. She is also a resource person for TISS (Tata school of Social Sciences  ) School of Vocational Education at Hisar .                          

Being from the Army fraternity, she is doing her bit towards the organization by heading the counseling cell in the Bhopal cantt, established for the welfare or the army personnel and their families and is actively involved in the same. She was instrumental in setting up a Wellness and Happiness Centre in 21 Corps. and conducted Mental Health Awareness programme for around 500 families of army personnel from various units at Bhopal ,Hisar

She is a postgraduate and M.Phil in Psychology from Bhopal University and has the distinction of being first in the order of Merit in both.Jyoti also holds a Diploma in Guidance &Counseling from NCERT Delhi   with distinction.

At present She is a Freelance Trainer developing need based programmes for various organizations ranging from Stress Management ,Effective Classroom Teaching ,Emotional Intelligence ,Mindfulness and  Communication Skills .She has developed aProgramme for Enhancing Happiness and Well Being in Adolescents.

To encourage creativity Scholastic India introduced Scholastic Writing Awards. Registrations have been opened for young talent of *grades 4 to 9*. Children participating in *SWA-2020* compete nationally for outstanding original written works with kids from all across the country and winners get the coveted chance to get published in an anthology published annually each year by Scholastic. 

 

*_SWA 2020, like the previous years, will be conducted in 2 grade groups comprising children of grades 4-6 and 7-9._*

 

• *The top 5 winners from both the grade groups* will be *published in an anthology.*   

• *The top 5 winners from both the grade groups* will also be entitled to a *writing residency workshop* with a renowned author to further hone and improve upon their skills followed by *an awards ceremony and a book launch event.*

The Dark Is Rising is a series of five contemporary fantasy novels for older children and young adults that was written by the British author Susan Cooper. It depicts a struggle between forces of good and evil called the Light and the Dark and is based on Arthurian legends, Celtic mythology, Norse mythology and English Folklore. Skype Session in French with Portuguese Students

With the aim of creating an International platform for our students where they get a chance to learn more about other countries, their culture and the Education System, MRIS 46 school library in collaboration with French Department has organized a Skype Session in French  with  Agrupamento de Escolas de Albufiera , Portugal. The Skype Session was held on 31st November, 2019 where the selected students of 5, 6& 7 classes interacted with partner school in French language.

The Skype Session started with Presentations and Paper Reading in which students of Agrupamento de Escolas de Albufiera School introduced our students to their school activities, Curriculum, Periods, Departments and Teachers. They also showed a well prepared and amazing video of their school to the students of our school.

 

 

The students of our school had prepared themselves on different interesting topics. They showed India Flag, images of Indian festivals , costumes and Culture. Both of the partner school students also presented a Ganesh Vandana which was appreciated by the students of Agrupamento de Escolas de Albufiera with a big round of applause.

It was an interactive session where students from both the groups asked each other questions related to School, Education System, Subjects, Library, Number of periods, Departments and Teachers. 

The students of Agrupamento de Escolas de Albufiera School asked about the sports in India and received ample information from Cricket to Hockey.  They also shared their views about the places they know and would like to see in India. 

This Skype Conference is a record of a unique partnership between the culture and education of the two countries.

Skype helps bridge the distance between a school in India and Portugal. Book club students of Grade 6, 7 and 8.  MRIS 46 and Agrupamento de Escolas de Pacos de Brando, Portugal  gathered to exchange information about culture and tradition  of Portugal & India .  Seeing the faces of students across the globe and learning about their life brought a new energy in students.

5 Reasons to Start Reading Comic Books                     

 

#1: Comic Books Help People Learn to Love Reading

 

To improve their reading skills, new readers can benefit from the visual format of comic books and graphic novels. With their intense visuals and focus on plot and characters, comic books can be much more engaging than other literary media, such as novels or short stories.

 

#2: Comic Books Help Us Think Differently

 

According to University of Windsor English professor Dale Jacobs (2007), comic books require readers to create meaning using "multiple modalities." Readers of comic books must process all the different components—visual, spatial, and textual—of what they are reading and integrate these components into one solid understanding of the story. This means that, even though comic books may appeal to readers for the same reason these individuals are drawn to other forms of entertainment, such as television and video games, reading these books actually involves much more complex processing. 

 

#3: Stories May Be Good for Your Brain

 

Neuroscientific research by Berns, Blaine, Prietula, and Pye (2013) indicates that reading stories actually has a noticeable effect on brain function. This study showed how reading a compelling novel changed participants' neuron activity not only while they were reading but also for several days after they finished the novel that was assigned to them. #4: Comic Books Are Cool

 

Superheroes are cool. And where do superheroes originate from? Comic books. If you enjoy big superhero blockbusters, such as The Avengers or The Dark Knight, there's no reason you won't enjoy the stories from whence these adaptations came.

 

#5: Comic Books Are More than Just Superhero Stories

 

There are also tons of great graphic novels and graphic nonfiction books out there, such as Alison Bechdel's autobiography, Fun Home; Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis; and many more. Many of these stories, just like your favorite books, explore weighty themes and feelings. The visual nature of graphic novels allows you, as the reader, to experience these themes in different ways than you do when reading a traditional book

Visit to Scholastic Publications Head Office

 

 

MRIS 46 Library had organized a visit to Scholastic Publication House with Reading Circle students on 15^th July 2019. Editor in Chief Mr. Shantanu Dutta Gupta gave a presentation on Why & How Books are Made. The Human Resource head briefed the students about the working of the publication and gave an office tour to understand the process of the books making.

Tips to create interest in Reading

1. Create a reading space
Make a reading area or fort where you can read and relax on your own. Add blankets, pillows, and a variety of books, and you will have a reading corner where you can read a book whenever the urge to read hits.
2. Start a series
Book series are a great way to keep child’s interest in reading high and eliminate the problem of figuring out what to read next. Another option is reading multiple, non-series books written by the same author.
3. Have “reading hour”
Each day, schedule reading time for yourself to sit down and read a chapter of a book. During this time, talk and discuss with you brother or sisiter or parents what is happening in the book, what is your favourite part was, and what you thinks will happen next.
